In the past, Verddra had magicked away from teaching Lorrek and Eldrila yet another lesson and went to her home in the land of Serhon within the county of Ditheran. As soon as she arrived, a maidservant approached her. “Your daughter has decided that today she doesn’t like food—of any kind, not even her favorite.”

Verddra nodded with a tired sigh when she heard this. She wasn’t surprised. Every day it was a different challenge for her little Fawn. Her husband hired every tutor who would take the job and try to work with Fawn, but the girl remained a menace. Verddra didn’t understand why. Time and again she wished they hadn’t used a surrogate mother to bear Fawn. If Verddra had been able to bear her herself, perhaps they would have a connection, and Verddra would be able to reach her daughter.

“Where is she now?” Verddra asked the maid.

“This way.”

Without a word, Verddra followed the woman into the corridors of the house.

In the magic realm, Lorrek trailed her. He took the opportunity to take in his surroundings. He had only passed through the county of Ditheran in Serhon on the way to the kingdom’s capitol. He never lingered long because he had no need to. The Kingdom of Serhon was divided into four parts, the County of Ditheran, the County of Hadran, the Principality of Daressa, and the Capitol of Serhon. Though the king ruled the entire kingdom in the capitol, three other men ruled under him in the other parts of the land, and they represented the people of those lands. Verddra’s husband was one such man answerable to the king. However, thinking back now, Lorrek had rarely heard much of the counts and barons of the land south of Cuskelom, but his mind had been too preoccupied with the events in his own court.

They walked through a modest castle. It didn’t bear the markings of great wealth or high rank, but it served its purpose—to offer protection to the people of the land if war or terrors ever came upon them.

Servants walked through the corridors, going about their errands. Knights went about their duties but paused to bow to the countess in passing. She didn’t acknowledge them. Instead, she set her gaze on the door at the end of the walkway, and she lengthened her strides, leaving the maidservant behind.

The girl saw her mistress went on without her, so she slowed her paced. If Verddra didn’t need her to deal with Fawn any longer, the maid had no objection. Instead, she saw a fellow maidservant heading her way with an armload full of towels, and she hastened up to her. “Here, let me help you.” She took some of the towels from her, and the two girls walked away from Fawn’s room.

Lorrek saw the subtle way the girl had slipped away from Verddra, and he smiled before turning to see Verddra knocking on the door before opening it without waiting for a response. She stepped in and closed the door behind her, so Lorrek went forward and passed through the door, unhindered.
